Update on Maryland Legislation to Ban Chlorpyrifos

The Maryland Pesticide Education Network announced that on March 18 the Chlorpyrifos Ban bill (SB 300) cleared its final House vote, just before session adjourned. With this vote Maryland would have become the fourth state in the nation to ban chlorpyrifos starting January 1, 2021. Maryland’s General Assembly would have provided near-immediate protection for Maryland’s children and the environment…BUT;

Unfortunately Gov. Larry Hogan vetoed bipartisan legislation in the 2020 legislative session that would have banned this toxic chemical. Indeed, the majority of Maryland lawmakers found the chlorpyrifos ban so urgent and so compelling that they passed it in the final moments of the legislative session that finished early due to COVID-19. This highlighted hyperlink here takes you to the insightful opinion piece by Ruth Berlin, Executive Director of the Maryland Pesticide Network.

So, we still have so much work to do, please call your legislators and do what you can to educate your neighbors on the importance of overturning Gov. Hogan’s veto on Bill SB 300.

    Wow. I learned so much from this couple. I grew up in a dairy farming community and saw all the smaller farmers bought up to become huge dairy farms. It was very interesting to hear about sustainable farming.
